How to grow Dendrobium

Dendrobium Growth Conditions

Dendrobium likes an environment with a large temperature difference, which is beneficial to its growth and flowering. It likes semi-shade and cannot tolerate direct sunlight. It should be shaded during the vigorous growth period in spring and summer. It needs more sunlight during the dormant period in winter. It is a shallow-rooted plant and is suitable for planting in breathable, drained and loose soil.

How to grow Dendrobium

Dendrobium likes warm and humid environments, and must maintain good ventilation. It cannot be exposed to the sun. It needs diffuse light maintenance in summer. The light intensity is lower in winter, and it is acceptable at other times except for diffuse light at noon.

Watering Dendrobium

Water the orchid appropriately according to its own needs and the dryness and humidity of the soil. Generally, water it once every 7 days. Do not water too much and no water accumulation should occur. If the temperature is high in summer, spray water appropriately and control watering in winter.

Fertilization of Dendrobium

Dendrobium needs proper fertilization during the maintenance period. When spring comes, apply sufficient compound fertilizer. During the growth period, you can apply some dilute fertilizer water. Be careful not to make the concentration too high. If fertilizer damage occurs to the roots, it will affect the growth of the plant.

Dendrobium pest control

A common disease of Dendrobium is soft rot, and the diseased plants need to be isolated and destroyed, and sprayed with agricultural streptomycin, Bordeaux mixture or methyl polysulfate in time. Common insect pests are aphids, scale insects, snails and slugs, which can be controlled by spraying 1500 times diluted pyrethroid, omethoate and malathion.

How to grow Dendrobium at home

1. Soil: When cultivating Dendrobium orchids, people generally choose substrates with good water permeability, such as mud moss, bark blocks, etc. Before cultivation, you can lay mud bricks and tiles on the bottom. One is to facilitate the development of the root system, and the other is to facilitate drainage.

2. Light: Dendrobium is a semi-shade plant and does not require much light. It is best to use diffuse light. When the sunlight is strong, shade measures should be taken.

3. Humidity: Dendrobium prefers to grow in a high temperature environment. The most suitable temperature for its development is between 25 and 35 degrees. The maximum high temperature is 38 degrees and the maximum low temperature is 15 degrees. The temperature difference between day and night must be kept within ten degrees. If the temperature is too high, spray water to cool it down.

4. Watering: There is no fixed time for watering Dendrobium. As long as you see the soil is dry, it means it needs watering. Water it enough each time, but do not allow water to accumulate.

5. Fertilization: Dendrobium orchids do not consume a lot of fertilizer. If there is base fertilizer in the soil before planting, it only needs to be fertilized once every six months. If there is no base fertilizer in the soil, it needs to be fertilized once every three months. The fertilizer should be mild and easy to absorb, such as rice washing water, human urine, etc.

Dendrobium maintenance precautions

As Dendrobium grows for a long time, rotten roots and branches will appear around it. These things need to be cleaned frequently to avoid infection. After each pruning, avoid watering the wound because the wound is prone to infection. Wait until the cut is dry before resuming the previous watering method.
