How to grow reeds well

How to grow reeds well

Reed growing conditions

Reeds prefer a moist environment with high air humidity. They mostly grow in low wetlands or shallow water and are often distributed beside irrigation ditches and river bank swamps. During their growth period, the soil needs to be kept moist and the soil cannot be dry for a long time.

How to grow reeds

Reed is not cold-resistant and prefers a warm environment. The maintenance environment must be suitable. Low temperatures need to be kept warm and high temperatures need to be cooled. In addition, it likes a humid environment, but there should be no water accumulation. If the potting soil is too waterlogged, the roots will rot and the growth of the plant must be maintained.

Reed watering

Reed is a moisture-loving plant and needs to be watered in time during the growing period to meet the plant's water needs, but it cannot be flooded for a long time to avoid lack of oxygen in the soil and root rot. Therefore, you can water it thoroughly once the soil is completely dry.

Reed fertilization

Reed is an economic plant that mainly produces stems. Reasonable fertilization is needed during the growth period. Maintaining nutritional balance is an important factor in reed growth and increasing yield. In mid-to-late May, nitrogen-based fertilizers can be applied in combination with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to maintain soil nutritional balance.

Reed pest control

The main pests of reeds are the reed stem borer and the thorny grass borer, which will reduce their yield. Prevention should be carried out in normal times. The soil should be renovated after harvesting to reduce the places where pests overwinter and the source of overwintering insects. Various lights should be used to lure and kill larvae in April and May, and pesticides should be sprayed in time for prevention and control.

How to grow reeds at home

Reeds are generally not applied with base fertilizer, and the nutrients in the soil cannot meet their growth needs. Therefore, timely fertilization is needed during the growth period. Urea, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, phosphate fertilizer, and potassium fertilizer can be used. Fertilizers can also be sprayed on the leaves, which is helpful for plant growth and yield increase.

Precautions for reed maintenance

Reeds are generally harvested in December. Whether harvested manually or by machine, 5 cm of stubble and some fallen leaves should be retained to ensure that the autumn buds are not damaged. The dead branches and leaves of the plant will rot and return to the soil, which can also improve the soil fertility.
