How to prune elmleaf plum

How to prune elmleaf plum

1. Prune the main branches

Prunus armeniaca is a shrub species, and its branches include strong main branches and weak main branches. Strong main branches require strong pruning, that is, large-scale pruning. On the basis of ensuring the integrity of the tree shape, some new branches are selected as renewal branches and the old branches are removed. In addition, the main branches should present clear layers, otherwise the purpose of pruning will be achieved but the beauty of the appearance will be lost. Weak branches should be pruned slightly, and weak branches should be cut off to prevent them from hindering the growth of new branches.

2. Trim the side cut

The side branches are where the flowers grow. When regulating the growth, the side branches need to be balanced to ensure the smooth formation of flower buds in the later stage. Strong side branches are beneficial to the formation of flowers, so weak pruning and light cutting will be sufficient, while weak side branches can be directly cut off. For branches growing in the same direction, you can decide how to comb them by observing the number of crossed branches to ensure that other branches can receive sufficient sunlight. You can also cut off branches that are not growing well to reduce unnecessary loss of nutrients.

When pruning, you need to start from the base of the branch. You cannot cut at any random position and leave any part of the branch, otherwise the original tree shape balance cannot be guaranteed. However, the pruning that is usually carried out is mainly aimed at some unnecessary branches, such as dead branches, weak branches, crossed branches, overlapping branches, and overgrown branches.
