How to propagate osmanthus

How to propagate osmanthus

1. Seed propagation

Osmanthus seeds can be sown in spring or autumn. Before sowing, the soil must be adjusted and base fertilizer must be applied. When sowing, the hilum should be placed on its side to prevent the radicle and young stem of the seed from bending, which will affect the growth of the seedling in the future. After sowing, cover the surface of the seeds with a layer of fine sand, and then cover them with straw mat. Pay attention to shade and moisture retention, and keep the soil moist at all times. Seedlings will emerge in the same year.

2. Cutting propagation

Before germination in spring, use one-year-old healthy branches. Cut branches about 5 to 10 cm long, cut off the lower leaves, keep 2 or 3 leaves on the upper part, and insert them in the culture soil. Water or spray water in time after cuttings, and shade them. Keep the temperature at 20 to 25℃. They will take root in about two months and can be transplanted after rooting.

3. Layering propagation

In spring or early summer, choose a relatively sturdy, low-trunk mother tree, and take the lower 1 to 2 year old branches, choose the easily bent parts, and ring cut them with a sharp knife to reach the wood part of the branches. Then press them into the soil 3 to 5 cm deep, fix the branches, and leave only the branch tips and leaves outside. Be sure to keep the substrate moist. After the branches have taken root in autumn, they can be cut from the mother plant and transplanted for maintenance.
