How to grow clematis in winter

How to grow clematis in winter

1. Adequate sunlight

Clematis is a light-loving plant and its growth cannot be separated from light. In winter, you can put it in a sunny place, where the sunlight is soft and will not burn the plant. The daily lighting time should not be less than 6 hours, otherwise it will grow poorly.

2. Keep warm

Most clematis are very cold-resistant and can grow in an environment of minus 20 degrees Celsius. However, the evergreen and F series are not cold-resistant and are generally only grown in the south. If you want to grow it in the north, you need to place it in a greenhouse or cover it with a plastic bag to keep it warm.

3. Control water and supplement fertilizer

Clematis enters a dormant period in winter and its demand for water is not high at this time. Watering must be done sparingly, just enough to ensure that the substrate is slightly moist. If it's warm indoors, you can also water it normally and let it continue to grow. Fertilization needs to be done in conjunction with repotting, and adding organic fertilizer and bone meal as base fertilizer will help with flowering in the second year.

4. Late winter pruning

Clematis needs to be pruned in late winter and early spring to help new branches grow. However, early-flowering plants should not be pruned to avoid nutrient loss and affect flowering. Large-flowered plants need light pruning to keep the plant shape unchanged. Only some of the branches that are too long should be cut off, and each branch should retain about 7-10 nodes. Late-flowering plants need to be heavily pruned, with most of the branches removed, leaving only 3-7 nodes.
