How to propagate succulents

How to propagate succulents

1. Seed propagation

After harvesting succulent seeds, you need to sow them immediately or wait until next spring. If the seeds are stored for a long time, their germination rate will drop significantly. Succulent seeds generally have a short lifespan, with some varieties only lasting a few weeks, so they should be sown as soon as possible.

2. Cutting propagation

1. Leaf cuttings: Cut off the healthy and disease-free leaves of the succulent and place them flat on the sand bed. Soon the leaves will sprout new buds, which will soon take root.

2. Stem cuttings: When pruning succulents, the cut branches can be used as cuttings. When grafting, the wound needs to be cleaned and wait for it to dry before grafting into the sand bed.

3. Root cuttings: Some succulent varieties have very developed root systems. The mature roots can be cut off and buried in the sand bed, with the top left exposed. It needs to be kept moist and exposed to bright sunlight during the growing period, and new shoots will grow soon.

3. Division propagation

Succulent plants that grow in clusters or have rosettes of leaves can be divided. When repotting, you can cut off their bulbs, small plants or tubers and plant them separately. Some varieties can only be propagated more purely by division, such as the Never-Sleeping City Orchid and the Golden-Edged Tiger Tail Orchid.
