How to control the flowering period of poinsettia

How to control the flowering period of poinsettia

Normal flowering conditions

Continuous short days

The flower bud differentiation of poinsettia is completed under short daylight conditions, at suitable temperatures, ensuring about 13 hours of darkness per day. Different varieties have different requirements for sunlight duration, and the time required for flower bud differentiation is also different, with a difference of about 1 to 2 weeks.

The night temperature is maintained below 24℃

Temperature is also very important for the differentiation of flower buds. If the night temperature is controlled below 24℃, it will promote the differentiation of flower buds. Otherwise, it will inhibit the differentiation of flower buds. Even if there is not enough light, the poinsettia will not bloom normally. In northern regions, the night temperature in October is below 24°C and basically no additional control is required. But the man should pay attention to cooling down appropriately.

Flowering period adjustment for National Day

To make it bloom on National Day, you have to advance the flowering period. The easiest way to do this is to cover the plant with a black cloth in September. To ensure its effectiveness, the black cloth must be used for 14 to 15 hours a day, from 5 to 6 pm every day to 8 am the next morning. The black cloth will increase the temperature, so be careful to control the temperature not to exceed 24℃, otherwise all your efforts will be in vain. The temperature in the southern region is higher at night. After it is completely dark, you can remove the black cloth to help dissipate heat.

By doing this, you can make the poinsettia bloom on National Day.

Flowering period regulation during the Spring Festival

The flowering time of poinsettia will be delayed during the Spring Festival. The flower buds are sensitive to light and are difficult to differentiate in a bright environment. The flowering period can be delayed as long as the plants are exposed to more light.

Normal maintenance is carried out during the day, and additional lighting treatment can be performed from 10 pm to 2 am the next day. Generally, the candlelight intensity of about 100 meters around poinsettia is enough to prevent flower bud differentiation, and a night light can be used at home. Similarly, control the temperature not to exceed 23°C. Of course, different varieties have different perceptions of light, so light treatment should be started in September.
