How do dormant bulb flowers survive the summer?

Flowers such as hyacinth, daffodil, and oxalis bloom in autumn, winter, and spring. After the flowers fade, as the weather gets warmer, they will enter a dormant period. Generally, there are three ways to care for them during the dormant period:

Ventilation and maintenance of potted plants

After the bulb goes dormant, the leaves will slowly wither and watering must be stopped at this time, otherwise the high temperature and humidity will easily cause the roots to rot.

First cut off the dead leaves and branches, then place it in a cool and ventilated place. When the weather turns cooler, resume watering. The underground bulbs will sprout again and grow vigorously.

The advantage of this method is that after watering is resumed, the mother bulb will produce many small bulbs, the number of bulbs will increase greatly, the growth will be denser, and it will be easier to overflow the pot.

Refrigerator storage

1. After the plant goes dormant and withers, cut off all branches and leaves, dig out the bulbs, soak them in a solution of carbendazim for 15 minutes, and then place them in a cool and ventilated place to dry.

2. Wrap the processed bulbs in a plastic bag or plastic wrap, and then store them in the refrigerator. The temperature should be between 2-7 degrees.

Sand storage

1. When yellow leaves appear on bulbous flowers in summer, start to cut off water. After the plants wither, cut off all branches and leaves, dig out the bulbs, disinfect them, and place them in a cool, dry, ventilated place to dry.

2. After drying, bury the bulbs in dry and breathable sand for storage. Do not use too much sand.

Tea bags, gauze bags, stockings, etc., as long as they are dry and breathable, can be used to store bulbs. The advantage of storing bulbs is that when you re-plant in the fall, you can select good quality bulbs for cultivation and take the opportunity to change the soil.

How do non-dormant bulbous flowers survive the summer?

Some bulbous flowers bloom in summer, such as Zephyranthes, Red Stone, and Agapanthus; some bulbous flowers bloom in spring, but after the flowers fade, their branches and leaves remain lush in summer, such as Pendanthus, Amaryllis, and Ophiopogon. This type of flower does not hibernate in summer, so pay attention to the following points when caring for it:

1. Shade

The refracted light in summer is very harmful to the tender branches and leaves of flowers. If they are exposed to the sun on the balcony for a period of time, the leaves will burn and the plants will collapse. Therefore, it must be shaded or moved to a place with scattered light in summer.

2. Water appropriately

Water normally in summer to keep the soil moist but not wet, but be careful not to allow water to accumulate, as excessive water can easily cause bulb rot.

3. Fertilization

During the summer flowering period, apply thin fertilizers frequently, and apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizers or thin liquid fertilizers once every two weeks or so.

4. Shaving

Shaving the head after flowering can not only save water and nutrients and avoid root and bulb rot in hot weather, but also promote the growth of new leaves, the germination of flower buds, and accelerate the blooming of the pot.
