How to grow yam to get high yield?

Chinese yam , also known as yam, yam egg or mountain yam, is a highly nutritious ingredient with many health benefits. With the increasing market demand year by year, more and more people are planting yam. Let’s learn together how to grow yam with high yield.

1. Choose good varieties

Choose varieties that are disease-resistant, stress-resistant, tolerant to fertilizer and water, high-yielding, high-quality, and resistant to storage, such as Zhenping yam, thick yam, and Nongdachang yam.

2. Choose the right planting plot

Choose a plot of land with high terrain, convenient drainage and irrigation, sheltered from the wind and facing the sun. It should have a low groundwater level, a deep tillage layer, fertile soil, and avoid continuous cropping to reduce diseases and nutrient imbalance.

3. Use trench fertilization method

Deep ploughing is carried out in winter, and deep trenches are dug with appropriate row spacing in spring. Clean the clay when filling the soil, and press it after each layer of filling to prevent water collapse. After the ditch is filled, mix the remaining soil with well-rotted high-quality manure to build ridges to prevent rainwater from entering.

4. Treatment of yam seeds

Select the upper part of the tuber with bright color and more than 3 cm in diameter as the seed stem, which should be free of mildew, disease spots and rot. Cut into sections in spring, each section is 15-20 cm long, dip the cut surface in quicklime powder and dry it in the sun for several days.

5. Planting with film covering

It is suitable to plant in late March and early April, with the plant spacing maintained at 0.23-0.25 meters, and covered with mulch to promote early emergence.

6. Elevated cultivation

Remove the film and release the seedlings in time. When the vines are 30 cm high, set up a herringbone support to increase ventilation and light transmission.

7. Grass covering between rows

In mid-to-late June, cover the yam rows with wheat straw to control weeds and maintain soil moisture.

8. Fertilization and watering

Apply appropriate amount of fertilizer after seedlings emerge, increase the amount of fertilizer during the growth period of vines and tubers, and keep the soil moist.

9. Disease prevention and pest control

Spray mancozeb before vine shaking to prevent anthracnose, and pay attention to the prevention and control of underground pests.

10. Dig at the right time

In late October, when the stems of yam basically stop growing and the leaves turn yellow, they should be dug up in time to prevent rotting and deterioration.

The above is a high-yield cultivation method of yam. If everyone does a good job in field management and other work, the yield and quality of yam can be effectively improved to meet market demand.
