Early-blooming large flower type

Early-flowering large flowers mostly bloom on old branches in spring and summer.

Common varieties

Common varieties include Bee Love, Elsa, President, Blue Light, etc.

Maintenance Tips

1. Soil

It likes fertile, loose, slightly alkaline soil, which must be kept ventilated, otherwise it will easily wither.

2. Water and Fertilizer

Water when the soil is dry and when it is wet. It is best not to water at noon in summer as this may cause root rot. Pour out the accumulated water in the pot in time after the rain.

Apply nitrogen fertilizer once during the spring budding period and apply a thin layer of compound fertilizer before flowering.

3. Pruning

Early-flowering large-flowered clematis usually blooms a lot in early spring. After the flowers fade, the dead branches should be pruned in time, and they may bloom again.

Late-flowering large flower type

Late-flowering large flowers mostly bloom on new branches in summer and autumn. They are generally single-petal varieties that bloom for two seasons.

Common varieties

Common varieties with late-flowering large flowers include Barbara, Utopia, Blue Angel, Oriental Morning Song, and Cardinal.

Maintenance Tips

Take Utopia as an example. Utopia is a classic variety among late-flowering large-flowered plants. It has a long flowering period and can bloom twice a year. It has strong explosive power and is very suitable for traction climbing walls.

1. Cutting propagation

1. Select a semi-lignified clematis branch between two nodes, and keep two buds on the node.

2. The soil can be a mixture of peat soil, vermiculite and perlite. The depth of cuttings should be such that the buds on the nodes just emerge from the soil surface. After cutting, compact the soil around them and water them thoroughly.

3. Place it in a ventilated place with scattered light, keep the leaves moist, and observe whether new buds emerge. It will take root in about January.

4. After rooting, plant it in a pot and place it in a place with diffuse light for about a week, then gradually increase the light.

2. Water and Fertilizer Management

1. Utopia is most afraid of withering. Water it once every 1 to 2 days in summer, preferably in the morning. Water it thoroughly and then pour out the accumulated water in the pot.

2. It is best not to apply fertilizer to the newly planted clematis in the first year. Just add some seedling-slowing fertilizer to the potting soil. In the second year, when it grows rapidly and flowers in large quantities, you should apply thin fertilizer frequently.

3. Lighting Management

Utopia likes semi-shade and should be placed in an environment with good light in spring and autumn. It needs appropriate shade for maintenance in summer and ensure about 4 hours of light indoors every day.

4. Pest and disease control

Clematis has a strong ability to resist diseases. It is generally prone to wilt in hot summer weather. If it still cannot recover after watering and spraying, it means it has been infected by pathogens. It can be sprayed with methyl thiophanate once a month.

Common insect pests include aphids, leaf miners, red spiders, etc. You can spray 70 to 100 times the concentration of ammonia at night.

Florida Type

The blooming period of Florida type (F series) clematis is generally from May to September. If it is well kept warm, it can bloom until December and remain unfaded all year round.

Common varieties

Common varieties of F series clematis include Fantasy Purple, New Fantasy Purple, Green Jade, Cassis, Pistachio, etc.

Maintenance Tips

1. Pruning after flowering

After the F-series clematis blooms in late spring, the withered flowers should be pruned off and the branches should be cut off 3 nodes below the flowers to avoid excessive nutrient consumption and wilt disease.

2. Light, water and fertilizer

F series clematis is shade-tolerant but not fertilizer-tolerant, and only needs half-day care. Water when the soil is dry and avoid using organic fertilizers.

3. Summer dormancy

When the leaves turn yellow and black in summer, it means the dormant period has begun. It is best to cut short the branches and dead leaves before the end of August. Pruning too late will affect growth.
