Introduction to Gourd Growth

Gourds mainly grow in plains, low-lying areas and hills with irrigation conditions. The soil requires good drainage and fertile soil. They are mainly distributed in tropical to temperate regions of the world and are cultivated in various parts of China.

Gourd growth cycle

The growth characteristics of gourd are mainly that it likes warm, sheltered environment, and the seedlings are afraid of freezing. The growth cycle of gourd is generally about 7 months, which varies depending on regional characteristics.

Gourd growth rate

The growth cycle of gourd is mainly divided into germination period, seedling period, initial flowering period and fruit-bearing period. The germination period is from seed germination to the appearance of the first true leaf, the seedling period is from the appearance of the first true leaf to the growth of 4 to 5 true leaves, and the initial flowering period and fruit-bearing period are from the planting of seedlings to the flowering of the first female flower.

The gourd grows very fast. The germination period takes 5 to 7 days, the seedling period takes about 25 days, it takes about 20 to 25 days from planting to flowering and fruiting, and the fruit-bearing period is generally 40 to 60 days.

Gourd growth cycle management

Generally speaking, with normal management, the annual yield of gourd per mu is about 1,500 kilograms at least. If properly maintained, the yield per mu can reach about 5,000 kilograms.

Temperature Management

Gourd prefers high temperature environment and is not resistant to low temperature and frost. The suitable temperature for its growth is 20-25 degrees. The seeds usually begin to germinate at 15 degrees, and the optimal germination temperature is 30-35 degrees.

Fertilization management

Fertilizers need to be applied in time during the growth period of gourd to ensure sufficient nutrients. When the seedlings grow to 5 to 7 leaves, apply decomposed organic fertilizer with appropriate amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. Water after covering the soil. Apply nitrogen fertilizer in time after fruit setting and water. Fertilizer and water supply must also be ensured during the fruiting period.
