How to propagate lilies

How to propagate lilies

1. Seed propagation

Before planting, you can select and find those seeds that are strong and well-developed. Plant the seeds in the soil, then spread a layer of soil about 1 cm thick on the seeds, and adjust the temperature to 12 to 15 degrees Celsius. This temperature range is conducive to seed germination, and the seedlings that grow will be relatively strong. If the temperature is below 5 degrees Celsius or above 25 degrees Celsius, it will not germinate.

Sprouts will appear about a month after the seeds are sown. When they are still seedlings, be careful not to expose them to direct sunlight. When autumn comes, small bulbs will grow below the soil. At this time, you can dig them out and transplant them.

2. Bulb propagation

This method can be used if you want to obtain multiple strains at the same time. When the lilies bloom in the fall, you can break off the small bulbs from healthy plants and place them indoors covered with sand to overwinter. You can plant it in a pot in the spring of the following year. Before planting it in the pot, you can disinfect it with an appropriate amount of disinfectant solution, such as carbendazim solution.

3. Scale cutting propagation

When using this method for cuttings, you can dig out the bulbs in the fall, then break off the thick scales on them, making sure each scale has a little bit of the stem disk. After it has dried in the shade, you can insert it into the soil prepared in advance. The insertion depth should be two-thirds of its own size. At this time, be sure to keep the soil moist.

If the temperature is kept at around 20 degrees Celsius, roots will grow in about 45 days. In the spring of the following year, you can plant the newly grown bulbs on the scales into pots.

4. Propagation by ramet buds

This method of breeding can only be used for certain breeds. The specific method is: when the buds mature in the summer, collect them, wrap them with moist fine sand, and then place them in a cool environment. When autumn comes, you can plant them in the soil prepared in advance. Note that the depth should be about 3 or 4 centimeters, and the distance between each row should be 12 to 15. After planting, spread a layer of fine soil on it and cover it with a straw mat.
