Water lilies and lotus

There are two main types of domestic lotus: water lilies and bowl lotus. They are very easy to distinguish. The leaves of water lilies usually float on the water surface and have a V-shaped notch.

The bowl lotus is more like a pocket lotus, which easily stands upright above the water surface and has oval leaves.

The flowering period of water lilies and bowl lotus is from June to September, which is the hottest time of the year. Just imagine, a touch of clear lotus under the scorching sun is really refreshing!

How to grow lotus

To be honest, compared with herbaceous flowers and wood flowers, lotus is much easier to grow. Huahua will teach you how to grow it step by step, and you will be addicted after just one time!

1. Differentiate lotus seeds

Lotus seeds are actually old lotus seeds. There is a small bump on the head of the lotus seed, but no bump on the tail.

2. Peel off the head shell

Use nail clippers or other tools to peel off the hard shell on the lotus seed head

Just peel it like the one below, it will germinate faster and more conveniently this way!

3. Soak in water to germinate

Find a small bowl, soak it in water, and place it in a cool place (the temperature is above 20 degrees now)

You can see green sprouts in about three days. I can't help but pick it up and take a look. It's such a great sense of accomplishment.

Continue soaking in water, and the buds will break out of the shell in 5-7 days, and will grow to about 8 cm in 10 days.

During this period, you can drop some nutrient solution into the water to accelerate the growth and development of the buds. After about 20 days, when the small tender leaves stretch into an oval shape, it is time to prepare for potting.

4. Planting in pots

Lotus is usually grown in half soil and half water. The soil ensures the nutritional needs of the lotus, and the water ensures the moist environment the lotus needs.

Just use ordinary sticky soil, dry it in the sun, then pour boiling water on it to sterilize and dry it.

Put the dried soil in the flowerpot and bury the seeds to a depth of about 3-5 cm

If the soil is not sticky enough and easily disperses in water, you can cover the soil with a layer of sand. It is best to rinse the sand with boiling water or carbendazim to sterilize it.

Pour clean water, the water depth is about 5-7 cm, turbidity is normal

It will be much better after 2-3 hours of settling.

5. Daily maintenance

Light: Lotus likes light, and sufficient light can ensure the growth temperature, so it is not afraid of any sun exposure.

Water volume: The water depth should be 5-7 cm during the seedling period to ensure the breathing of the seedling. As the lotus grows, the water should be gradually increased. The depth of the seedling should be maintained at 8-12 cm.

Fertilization: Compared with other flowers, lotus does not require much fertilizer. Just add some crushed peanut shells to the soil before flowering.
