How to grow Houttuynia cordata to achieve high yield?

Houttuynia cordata , also known as fish mint , is a plant that can be used as both edible and medicinal. Its unique smell makes people who like it love it very much, while people who don't like it avoid it. As its value is recognized by more people, more and more people are beginning to try eating it, showing great potential for development. So how can we grow Houttuynia cordata to achieve high yield?

1. Choose a suitable cultivation environment

The most suitable growth temperature for Houttuynia cordata is 12-25℃. It is cold-resistant but not heat-resistant. Suitable plots should avoid direct sunlight and keep the soil moist.

2. Planting*

Houttuynia cordata propagates through rhizomes . Choose fertile sandy loam and apply 3,000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and 25 kg of compound fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer. When planting, choose thick underground stems and cut them into short stems of 4 to 6 cm. The plant spacing is about 5 cm and the furrow spacing is about 10 cm.

3. Field management

Weed control: Control weeds by increasing seeding density or rotating crops between wet and dry land, and avoid using herbicides .

Fertilization: Mainly nitrogen fertilizer, with appropriate application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. The first topdressing should be carried out 10 days after emergence. During the vigorous growth period, 15 kg of compound fertilizer should be applied per mu.

Watering: Keep the soil moist, especially in dry conditions.

Mulch: Cover with corn stalks or weed mulch during the winter to help retain heat and suppress weeds.

Remove flower buds: Remove flower buds in time to promote the growth of underground stems.

4. Harvesting

If the above-ground part grows too tall, you can cut off some of the stems and leaves to promote the transfer of nutrients to the roots. After being dug up, the Houttuynia cordata should be cleaned and covered with a shelter or soaked in clean water to prevent light from penetrating or water loss.

In short, planting Houttuynia cordata needs to consider local market demand and plan the planting rationally. This plant is not only easy to cultivate, but also has high edible and medicinal value and has broad market prospects.
