How to grow peony in winter

How to grow peony in winter

1. Temperature

If we look at it from the perspective of temperature, it can be divided into south and north.

In the central and southern parts of the country, the temperature in winter is not very low. Although it is only around zero degrees, it is not low compared to cold places, so we can put it outdoors.

If we live in the north, these places are very cold, and it is not feasible to leave them outside. If they are potted plants, they must be moved indoors. But if they are planted in the ground, it doesn't matter, because the earth itself can be regarded as a heat storage. Even if the temperature is relatively low, the surface temperature is still acceptable. Even if the surface of the soil is frozen, the temperature will not be very low, so it is relatively stable, so we don't need to move it into the house specially.

But if it is a potted plant, because the pot is relatively small, it is easy to freeze or the soil temperature is too low, so we still need to move it indoors for maintenance. Generally, a larger pot is better for it, because if the pot is larger, the temperature change inside will be much smaller. In addition, we can also stuff some broken foam into the paper box and then put the flower pot in it. This will keep it warm and be better for its growth.

2. Sunlight

In fact, we still cannot place it where it is exposed to direct sunlight in winter for several reasons.

The first is that it may stimulate its growth. As mentioned earlier, it needs to hibernate in winter, so growth is not a good thing, and it may grow poorly in the second year.

The second reason is that if it is exposed to the sun during the day, the soil absorbs the heat, but the lower temperature at night will cause frostbite, thus harming it.

Generally, corridors are more suitable for wintering because the sun cannot be seen here and the temperature is generally around zero degrees. If the place is warmer, then place the north-facing balcony. In this way, the sunlight will not have any impact on it, so it is also a good choice.
