When is the best month to prune mango trees?

Therefore, mango trees should be pruned during the harvest season, which is from August to September . Larger and dense branches need to be pruned, and the apical dominance of the branches needs to be weakened.

How to prune a mango tree

When pruning a mango tree, you must follow the principles of heavy density and light sparseness , heavy top and light bottom, and bright but not hollow interior . Heavy pruning is only required in areas that are too dense.

1. First pruning

Spring is the time when mango trees bloom and set fruit. After the fruit sets, the fruitless branches should be cut short to reduce nutrient loss and accelerate the development and growth of the fruit. The amount of pruning during this period should not exceed 20% of the whole tree. The principle of pruning is to use thinning as the main method and short pruning as the auxiliary method.

2. Second pruning

Summer is the fruit growth and ripening period. During this period, the main thing is to prune some fruitless branches to reduce nutrient loss, so as to accelerate the development and growth of fruits.

We also need to prune the pedicels and branches that affect the development of the fruit, and remove deformed fruits, diseased and insect-infested fruits, and small and aborted fruits. After such pruning, it can better promote the mango tree to grow branches, cultivate the fruiting mother branches for the next year, and increase the light transmittance of the crown.

3. Third pruning

Mangoes are mainly available in summer, and are basically harvested in autumn. After the fruit is harvested, the trees should be pruned again to promote the growth of autumn shoots.

In addition, after the harvest, in order to increase the yield next year, at least two autumn shoots should be cultivated, and the last shoot should not be later than early November. Therefore, autumn pruning should be completed by the end of August or the beginning of September.
