How to prolong the flowering period of Kalanchoe

How to prolong the flowering period of Kalanchoe

1. Potting soil

First of all, the pot for planting it should not be too big. Many people think that the bigger the pot is, the more space it has to grow and the better it will grow. But this is not the case, because the space is large, the roots will extend everywhere, and many roots will consume a lot of nutrients, so its flowers will become fewer and smaller, and the days of flowering will be shortened. It is best if the plant is not too tall. Summer is its dormant period, and winter is the best time for it to grow, so it should be significantly pruned before autumn arrives to make it shorter, so that its branches can develop. Then, with the addition of fertilizer, its growth trend will improve. The more branches it has, the more flowers it will have.

2. Don’t apply fertilizer too concentratedly

Fertilizer and water are ways to make its branches and leaves denser, but not excessive. Anything is excessive or insufficient. If a large amount of fertilizer is applied, it will become weak and unable to absorb nutrients. Then many yellow leaves will appear, and it will lose its vitality, thus affecting its ornamental effect. As long as you add some fertilizer when it is blooming and forming buds, the flowers will grow more and last longer.

3. Appropriate exposure to light

It likes sunlight and can tolerate partial shade. It is afraid of extreme heat in summer and extreme cold in winter. Except for the dog days of summer, it needs shade at noon, but it should be exposed to light at other times. It needs at least 4 hours of direct sunlight every day so that it can grow healthily. If it receives more than eight hours of sunlight, its leaves and branches will grow compactly, storing more energy and extending the flowering period.

4. Proper watering

You need to control its watering moderately. It is a succulent flower with a lot of water in its body, so it can tolerate drought more easily, but is afraid of waterlogging. If it is planted on a higher floor and the air is drier, it will grow better. In spring and autumn, water it once every three days and make sure it is watered thoroughly. In the summer, you should water it less often, once every five to seven days. Place it outdoors and keep it out of rain. If there is too much water, the leaves will fall off easily. Only by controlling water appropriately can the flowering period be prolonged.
