Why do hydroponics breed insects?

Water sources are high-risk areas for mosquitoes to lay eggs, especially still water surfaces.

Hydroponic plants are relatively closed water sources, and the nutrients produced by the plant roots make them more likely to attract mosquitoes.

As temperatures rise, mosquitoes become more active. How can we maintain a cool environment for hydroponic plants?

Change water frequently to avoid insects

It takes 2-3 days for insect eggs to hatch, so we need to change the water every 2-3 days to prevent insect eggs from being born or hatching.

In the picture below, the water was not changed in time, and larvae appeared.

When changing water, pay attention to cleaning the roots of the plants and wash off the sticky attachments.

If the plant has too many roots and there are rotten parts, cut them off in time to prevent the rotten parts from growing.

Put it back into a clean container (the container can be sterilized by soaking it in boiling water or soaking it in carbendazim)

Note: You can also use boiled water as a new water source

Raise fish in water to eliminate insects

For some hydroponics where water change is not easy, you can raise some small fish in the water. The small fish will use the larvae as bait and help you eliminate it!

The picture shows fish and flowers being raised together. Isn't it more beautiful to see the little fish swimming around?

Vitamin B2 kills insects

Mosquitoes hate the taste of vitamin B2. Putting a few tablets of vitamin B2 in the water can "smoke" away the mosquitoes without harming the plants.

Keep ventilation to avoid insects

Placing hydroponic plants in a ventilated place is not only beneficial to the growth of the plants, but also prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water.

Note that hydroponic plants generally do not need much sunlight, and can be placed on a shady balcony for ventilation.

Or place it on a closed windowsill for a while

Clean more to prevent insects

To keep it clean and hygienic, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth, remove dead leaves, and keep the overall cleanliness of the green plants.
