How to prune Cinnamomum cassia

How to prune Cinnamomum cassia

1. How to prune

1. You should decide how to prune the tree based on its growth trend. If its trunk is relatively high and the shape of the tree is not very good-looking, you can cut off all the branches at two-thirds of the trunk to allow the trunk to grow more new branches. If the crown of the tree is sparse but the growth is strong, you can cut off the thick branches and keep the thin branches so that all the branches can grow more balanced. If there are too many branches and they do not grow very strong, you need to carefully prune them and keep some branches appropriately to make them grow stronger.

2. It has a strong ability to sprout new branches and is very suitable for pruning. If it is a potted plant, it cannot be allowed to grow freely. The tops of the branches on the straight trunk should be cut off to allow more branches to grow at the bottom of the trunk, which can make the crown larger and the branches stronger. If the main branches are relatively dense, you can pull them apart a little to allow the tree to stretch out more and the crown can continue to expand. If you want to make it into a tree stump bonsai, you can usually trim it into a nice shape after five to eight years.

2. Maintenance after pruning

1. Watering

After pruning, you need to water it thoroughly once, and keep it wet from time to time. If there is too much water, its roots will rot. Do not use alkaline water to water it.

2. Add fertilizer

Because it will grow flowers continuously, it will consume a lot of nutrients, so you should add more phosphorus fertilizer to help it grow flowers. After pruning, you can add nitrogen fertilizer to promote the growth of branches and leaves. The concentration of fertilizer can be relatively low, but the frequency of adding fertilizer should be sufficient. You can use some organic fertilizer on a normal basis. Fertilization should be carried out together with watering. Generally, fertilizer should be added every time a flower grows.

3. Light temperature

In summer, it needs to be shaded, and only about 20 percent of light is needed. In order to keep it blooming, you need to increase the light in winter. It normally blooms within the temperature range of 2 to 22 degrees. If the temperature is too hot during the hot summer, you can sprinkle some water on the leaves to lower the temperature and increase the humidity. If it is too cold in winter, you need to keep it warm.
