How to reproduce Pittosporum tobira

1. Seeding method

Pittosporum has its own seeds, which are in its flesh. The fruit matures between October and November. The color of the ripe fruit is different from that of the unripe fruit. The former is yellow and the latter is green. We need a certain method to collect seeds, and the method is quite simple. We just need to dry the fruits we collected, and then knock out the seeds after the skin cracks.

After that, a certain processing method is needed, which requires wood ash. We put it together with wet water, then scrub the seeds, and then we can get pure seeds. Of course, the seeds also need to be stored in a certain way, and can only be officially sown in March.

Generally speaking, the germination rate of sown seeds is not low, but it is not very high either, only about 50%. Because the seedlings grow very slowly, we have to wait until they have grown for two years before we can officially move them into pots for planting. After that, we also need to wait until the third or fourth year before we can plant them in the nursery. When transplanting, we must remember to keep the roots covered with soil.

2. Cutting method

The time for cuttings is in spring. It is more convenient at this time. We can take out the required buds for cuttings when new leaves grow. However, there are also requirements for the young shoots. They should be one to two years old and about fifteen centimeters in length.

We have to cut it, and then what we need to do is to insert it into the wet sand bed. When taking cuttings, we must control the light intensity. The light does not need to be too strong, diffuse light is enough. In addition, we must remember to maintain good humidity.

Generally speaking, it takes about twenty days for the roots to grow, and it takes two or three years to transplant them into a nursery. Normally we need to water and fertilize, and also remember to prune.
