How to grow lotus root in a pot

Preliminary preparation

Choose healthy and intact lotus roots, soil, water tank, and water.

Planting steps

Add a layer of dead leaves or straw to the bottom of the container, then add 15 to 20 cm of organic fertilizer and silt. (If conditions permit, it is best to use pond mud)

Choose two lotus roots with buds as lotus seeds. The lotus buds can be dipped in wood ash to kill bacteria and disinfect.

Bury the lotus root nodes about 2 cm into the soil, then add water to allow the water to fully soak the soil in the pot.

Maintenance tips for potted lotus roots

Water requirements

Sprouting growth period: Before the first leaf of the lotus root appears, maintain 4 to 7 cm of shallow water to promote lotus root germination.

Peak growth period: When the stems and leaves of lotus roots grow vigorously and lotus root leaves appear in large numbers, the depth of the water layer should be maintained at about 12 to 15 cm during this period.

Lotus root formation period: Lotus roots no longer grow new leaves, which means they are beginning to form lotus roots. At this time, the water layer drops to about 4 to 7 cm.

Nutrient requirements

After the lotus root grows leaves, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can be applied once every half a month to promote growth. During the lotus bud formation period, potassium phosphate fertilizer or decomposed cake fertilizer should be applied to make the flowers bigger and fuller.

Light temperature requirements

The suitable growth temperature for lotus is 25-35 degrees Celsius. Ensure at least 6 hours of light per day. Do not place it in the shade, otherwise the lotus will easily grow too tall and be difficult to bloom.
