How to pinch the top of jasmine

How to pinch the top of jasmine

1. Time

Because it will grow new branches, in order to avoid the branches being too long, of course, in addition to this reason, this is also because its flowers are relatively large and will bloom in large numbers on new branches, while old branches rarely bloom, so we need to pick the hearts two or three times between May and July. If pinching is done too early, it may affect the development of the root system, making the seedlings weak and affecting some subsequent growth. Therefore, it is better to plant it later and let it grow fully than too early. If we pinch off the tips too early, the seedlings will have four or five true leaves and their vigorous growth has just begun. At this time, if we pinch off the tips too early, it will be a serious blow to the flowers that have just started their own growth path.

2. Methods

The targets of pinching are branches that have grown too much or branches that are useless. Both are unnecessary because they will not only make the plant look ugly, but also affect the flowering and fruiting of other branches.

Each time you pinch off, only two pairs of buds should be left at the base of the new branch. For those plants that are thriving, they can no longer be topped after July. Thin, weaker plants do not need to be topped so frequently.

In addition, after the flowers of the winter jasmine have faded, we need to cut off the dead branches, diseased roots and overcrowded branches from the base. In this way, the nutrients will be gathered together, and the shape of the plant will be beautiful and the overall look will be neater.

It is not appropriate to pinch off the top in winter. If you want to prune the entire plant, you should also follow its habits. Not all woody plants are suitable for pruning in winter. For example, since forsythia blooms in spring, it is not very suitable to be pruned in winter. Pruning at this time will cut off some buds and branches, and the effect of the flowers blooming in spring will not be very good.
