Can plum blossoms be grafted all year round?

Can plum blossoms be grafted all year round?

Spring Grafting

In spring, plum blossoms can be grafted before budding. Grafting can be done by cut grafting, subcutaneous grafting, bud grafting, or cleft grafting.

Summer Grafting

If plum blossoms are to be grafted in summer, they can be grafted after the first branches of the plant mature and before the second branches sprout. When grafting, scions can be used, and cleft grafting with leaves can be performed. Cleft grafting is more suitable for grafting of multiple varieties, but please note that you need to cover the grafting with plastic bags to keep moisture and shade.

Autumn Grafting

When grafting plum blossoms in autumn, you can use the belly grafting method. It is best to use the long bud closed grafting method. This method is relatively simple and has a higher survival rate. If the grafted plum blossoms do not sprout at this time, you can make a small hole in the bud eye of the tree in the spring of the second year to allow the buds to sprout. In this way, the graft can survive.

Winter Grafting

When grafting plum blossoms in winter, it is best to use the root grafting method.

When the plum blossoms are dormant in winter, you can remove the roots of the healthier peach or apricot plants, retain the fibrous roots, and then cut the roots into small sections. If the roots are thicker, you can use cutting grafting or subcutaneous grafting. If the roots are thinner, you can use bark grafting. After grafting, plant them in a sunny place sheltered from the wind, cover the binding with soil, and water them thoroughly. Note that management can be more extensive in winter.
