What to do if Christmas cactus root rots

What to do if Christmas cactus root rots

Causes of root rot:

1. Overwatering

The main reason for Christmas cactus root rot is watering too frequently, watering before the soil in the pot is dry. Or the soil has poor drainage, resulting in high water content in the soil, lack of oxygen and suffocation of the roots. Especially in summer, when it enters a semi-dormant state, the roots can easily rot if watering is not controlled well.

2. Fertilization is too concentrated

Another reason for Christmas cactus root rot is over-fertilization, which can burn the root system. Christmas cactus does not like fertilizer, and neither concentrated fertilizer nor raw fertilizer can be used. When applying chemical fertilizers, you must adhere to the principle of small amounts and multiple times, otherwise the roots will find it difficult to absorb and it will remain in the soil, causing fertilizer damage.

Solution:

Take the Christmas cactus out of the pot, clean up the rotten parts, place it in a cool and ventilated place for 1 to 2 days, and replant it in a yellow sand pot. Place it in a ventilated and shaded place. Do not water it at the beginning. After 5 days, water it in small amounts to keep the soil moist. Check after 10 days to see if new roots have grown.

If the Christmas cactus is grafted on a cactus, use the same method to cut off the rotten part and replant it.

For Christmas cacti with larger plants and lush branches and leaves, in addition to replanting, you should also cut off some branches and leaves to reduce water evaporation, and then switch to normal management after rooting takes place.
