How to propagate Gelsemium elegans

How to propagate Gelsemium elegans

Basic form and characteristics

It belongs to the perennial plant class. The thickest plant can grow to about 12 meters. The surface is smooth without dents. When it blooms, it is mainly in cyme-shaped inflorescences with about two to three flowers, and the flower color is light yellow. The fruit is oval, with a slightly thin skin and is fragile. The seeds are oblong in shape. They bloom in May and bear fruit in July. They can be used as medicine.

Seed propagation

After the fruit seeds are mature, they are collected and can be directly sown for propagation. The following materials should be prepared when sowing: humus, bean dregs, garden soil, etc. Mix the three raw materials in proportion, then add more than half of the soil directly into the flowerpot, then spread a layer of fruit seeds, keeping the fruit seeds about 3 cm apart, and then cover with about 1 cm of soil. Because the plant's fruiting period lasts a long time, it requires a certain amount of patience and careful care. When the fruit is ripe, it has an oval shape, the skin is slightly thin and fragile, so it should be handled with care when harvesting.

Propagation by division

Division is usually carried out in autumn. First, choose mature plants that have grown for more than 5 years. While retaining the original root system, use tools to remove the old roots on the top. This will prevent the flower buds on the top from blooming and provide sufficient nutrient support. Then separate the rhizome, use a sharp tool to cut it, and ensure that the rhizome is intact. It is best to reserve more than 3 true leaves, and then prepare a deeper flowerpot for planting. Repot and cultivate in the normal way, so that the obtained variety can be better.

Precautions

Although the plant is of great value and is a treasure from the root to the leaves, it can only be applied externally and cannot be taken internally. You need to consult relevant personnel before use.
