How to propagate the deer onion (daffodil)

How to propagate the deer onion (daffodil)

1. Breeding Methods

Because under normal growing conditions, the seeds of deer onion are very few and the germination rate is extremely low, the following two methods are generally used for reproduction.

1. Division method

Division is the simplest method for the propagation of onion. Generally, it is necessary to divide the deer onion during the period when it is dormant or after it blooms. The specific method of division is to dig out the entire plant of the deer onion first, and then cut off the sub-plants growing near the mother plant for planting. It will probably bloom beautiful flowers the following year.

2. Scale cutting and plant regeneration

It can usually be done once every four years. First, place the small bulbs of the onion into the soil about five centimeters deep. Then use a knife to make a cross on the bulb from the bottom upwards and then cut it longitudinally. The cut surface should be about three-quarters of the way. Finally, bury the bulb in the soil. After a period of time, you will see many spherical seedlings growing from the cut of the bulb, and then you can take these small balls and plant them.

2. Precautions

1. Soil

Generally, fertile soil with more organic matter is chosen, and loose sandy soil is best.

2. Water and fertilizer

The flowering period of deer onion is generally around September every year. During this period, the soil must always be kept sufficiently moist and fertilized once.

3. Pests and diseases

Deer onion is very susceptible to anthrax, so it needs to be sprayed with carbendazim every 15 days.

4. Note during dormancy

In May and June every year, the deer onion will slowly enter a dormant period. At this time, you must reduce watering, otherwise it will easily cause the roots of the deer onion to rot, and in severe cases, it will die.

Friends who like summer daffodils can choose a method to propagate them, and if they take good care of them, they will harvest beautiful flowers.
