How to Plant Juniper Seeds

How to Plant Juniper Seeds

Obtaining seeds

First, select plump, round, ripe fruits and place them in a cool place and wait for them to dry naturally.

Then put the fruit in a sturdy bag, add some small stones, and rub it vigorously to break up the peel.

Then pick out the stones, rinse off the peel and pulp with clean water, leaving the seeds.

Put the seeds in disinfectant to sterilize them, then take them out and rinse them with water.

Because the seed coat of juniper is very hard and difficult to absorb water and swell, it is usually in a dormant period. Therefore, you need to soak the seeds in 80℃ hot water for 3 days to break its dormancy.

Then soak the seeds in 40℃ clean water for a week, take them out and mix them into sand, and use low-temperature stratification to germinate them.

When the temperature rises around March of the following year, you can move the seeds outdoors and sow them when they sprout naturally.

Soil selection

Juniper likes fertilizer, and choosing planting soil with higher fertility for planting can achieve better cultivation effects.

In addition, since the germination process of seeds requires the participation of oxygen, choosing a relatively loose and breathable planting soil can effectively increase the germination rate of seeds.

Planting method

First, put the planting soil to be used in the sun for disinfection.

Then put the planting soil into the flowerpot, level it, and start sowing the seeds. The spacing between seeds should be about 15cm. After sowing, cover the seeds completely with planting soil, and no seeds should be exposed to the air. The covering planting soil only needs to be 2cm thick, not too thick or too thin.

After covering the planting soil, you need to use a sprinkler to wet the planting soil. Be careful to water slowly when watering, and not too quickly to avoid washing the seeds away. Don't water too much, otherwise the water will submerge the seeds and affect their normal germination.

Transplanting method

The seeds should be watered immediately after being planted in the soil, and they will germinate after 2 to 3 weeks. After one year of careful care, the seeds can grow to several centimeters in height and can then be transplanted.

Before transplanting, the new planting site needs to be leveled and then a tree pit needs to be dug on it.

Pull out the young plant with its roots and soil and plant it in a new tree pit. Press the soil down firmly without leaving any gaps.

After planting, water it immediately and thoroughly.

If necessary, a support should be set up to prevent it from growing crooked.
