How to prune roses in winter

How to prune roses in winter

one. Preliminary pruning preparation and selection of pruning objects

1. Before pruning, carefully determine the branches and leaves to be pruned through observation. The branches and roots that are required to be pruned basically include: withered branches and roots, branches and roots that have been attacked by diseases and insects, and branches and roots that are too thin. We can cut off these useless branches from the bottom of the plant.

2. If this plant is planted outdoors, it must be pruned when winter comes. Depending on its own growth conditions, the application of fertilizers, and whether its growth environment is ventilated and breathable, we can start pruning when its root branches are 15 cm above the ground, and cut off all the upper parts, including old, weak, and diseased branches. Because it grows very fast and has a strong germination ability, especially the flower buds must bloom on new branches.

3. This plant can be repotted after two to three years, and some old branches whose bark has become woody, as well as the roots growing from the old branches, can be pruned off. However, it should be noted that the amount of pruning should be controlled within one-third. This is done to stimulate the roots to grow new, healthier and stronger roots.

two. Specific operation method

If it is an older rose, you can choose good and strong buds, and cut them diagonally at the upper five to eight millimeters when they are parallel to the bud point. Remember, if you cut too close to the bud, the flower bud will not have a chance to sprout. The slanted cut should be in the opposite direction of the bud. If the length of the part left on the bud point is too long, it will cause black branches from top to bottom. Be sure to use a pair of sharp scissors. If the scissors are too blunt, the cuts will break the buds and easily cause the branches to wither.
