What are the cultivation methods and precautions of blueberries?

Blueberry cultivation method

There are two main types of blueberries. One is a low shrub with small grains and contains anthocyanins. The second is artificially cultivated blueberries, which are 240 cm tall, have larger fruits, full flesh, and a better taste. The main method of reproduction is sowing.

Blueberry is suitable for planting in loose, breathable, well-drained slightly acidic soil. It likes a cool environment and cannot tolerate strong sunlight exposure. It needs shade in summer and can be exposed to the sun all day in a diffuse light environment in the other three seasons. Normally, water it when the soil is dry. Water it thoroughly. The temperature should not be lower than 0 degrees when cultivated in winter, and fertilization should be appropriate.

Watering method

Blueberry trees like to grow in a humid environment, so the soil in the pot must be kept moist during normal cultivation. In winter, the weather is relatively cold and the plants require less water, so they are usually watered once a week. Be careful not to allow water accumulation each time you water them, and the water temperature should be almost the same as that indoors.

Fertilization method

During the growth period of the blueberry tree, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer can be applied once every 15 days, and potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer can be sprayed. Be careful to apply fertilizer in moderation and do not apply concentrated fertilizer, otherwise it will burn the roots of the plant and affect growth.

Pruning methods

During the growing season, the overgrown branches and sprouting branches on the blueberry fruit-bearing trees can be pruned to promote side branches. For 3 to 4 year old fruit-bearing trees, weak branches and dense clustered branches can be pruned. For main fruit-bearing branches that are more than 5 years old, they can be cut back in time.

Notes on blueberry cultivation

There are relatively few diseases and pests in blueberries. The main pests are poisonous moths, caterpillars, pear and peach borers, longhorn beetles, etc. They need to be sprayed with pesticides in time for prevention and control. From mid-to-late April to mid-August, prevention is the main approach, combining prevention and control.
