How to plant Hypericum seeds

How to plant Hypericum seeds

1. Seed collection

After summer in August and September, the fruits of Hypericum enter the ripening period. When picking seeds, observe the fruits directly and select those with good growth momentum and strong branches. It can be sown in spring or autumn. Generally, spring sowing is more popular. This time is around March or April. Choose a sunny day without wind to sow. The germination rate is highest during this period. If the seeds cannot be used in time after being taken out, they can be put into bags and stored at low temperatures.

2. Sowing

1. Land preparation

When choosing land, you should select fertile land with good nutrition, and carry out comprehensive tillage, removing rocks, weeds, and loosening the soil. After sterilization, make ridges one meter wide and add enough base fertilizer.

2. Seed soaking

After picking the ripe fruits, dry them and rub them with your hands to get the seeds. Soak the seeds in warm water for a day or two. After the seeds absorb water and swell, they can be planted.

3. Planting seeds

Take out the seeds, scatter them in the previously prepared garden soil, cover them with one centimeter of soil, cover them with a straw mat to keep them warm, and finally spray water with a watering can until the soil is moist, and then you can water directly on the straw mat.

4. Seedling emergence

Under normal circumstances, seedlings will emerge in ten days to half a month, and all viable seeds will come out after twenty days.

3. Post-maintenance

1. Moisture

After the seedlings grow out and the flowers bloom, you can water them two or three times a day. When it is dry in summer, you can spray water on the leaves, but also pay attention to drainage and avoid watering too quickly which may cause root rot. The temperature drops in winter, so give the plant antifreeze water before the weather turns cold. When moving indoors in the winter, do not give it too much water. You can spray some water on the leaves, but be careful to give less water to the roots.

2. Fertilization

Add base fertilizer before planting and use organic fertilizer before transplanting. No fertilizer is needed during the growing season.
