How to winter climbing roses

How to winter climbing roses

1. Proper pruning

Climbing roses generally begin to shed their leaves when temperatures are lower. Then we can do a little pruning before it sheds its leaves so that it can survive the winter smoothly. We can cut off all its flowering branches, diseased branches, weak branches, etc. In addition, old branches that have been there for a long time can also be pruned away. In this way, it will start to shed its leaves automatically before the frost falls, and then if you tie it up properly, it will enter a dormant state. Usually larger plants can survive the winter successfully. If you are really worried, you can cover them slightly to keep them warm. There will be no problem for them to survive the winter successfully. However, it is not particularly easy for small plants to survive the winter, so they must be cared for more carefully.

2. Specific cold protection methods

1. For adult plants

For some plants that have already grown into adults, if you want them to survive the winter smoothly, you usually pile some soil on their roots and then protect them from the cold. Then wait until the frozen water is applied, then shorten the long branches appropriately, and then pile up 20 to 40 centimeters of soil on them. This will provide adequate protection against the cold.

2. For larger plants

If your plant is relatively large, then the anti-cold measures need to be adjusted appropriately. We can wait until the plant stops growing and then prune it slightly. After that, we can place it in the southeast direction and prevent cold wind from blowing on it to achieve better insulation.

3. For young plants

Some plants that have not yet grown, that is, younger plants, have relatively small root systems and the plants look very weak, so you need to be more careful when protecting them from the cold. We can wait until it stops growing and then bury it in the soil to protect it from the cold.

4. Temperature

In winter, temperature is very important for whether it can survive the winter safely. No matter the size of the plant, you can move it to an ordinary cold cellar and control the temperature between 0 and 5 degrees. Or you can place it outdoors and bury it in the soil.
