How to care for plum blossoms before winter

How to care for plum blossoms before winter

1. The potting soil should not be too dry or too wet

As we enter the autumn week, we should start to reduce watering for potted plum blossoms. Potted plum blossoms are very sensitive to water. If the soil in the pot is too wet, its leaves will easily turn yellow prematurely, fall off, or even die. However, if the soil in the pot is too dry for a long time, it will cause its leaves to fall and affect its flowering. So generally, you should water it when the soil is dry. If it is not dry, there is no need to water it. If you do water it, you should water it thoroughly. After the autumn cools down, you should start to reduce watering so that its branches can become fuller.

2. Strengthen water and fertilizer management

After entering autumn, basically organic fertilizer liquid should be applied to the pot every 7 to 10 days, usually mainly phosphorus fertilizer, and the tender shoots that sprout in autumn should be cut off, because the tender shoots cannot mature in winter, which will waste its nutrients, so they should be pruned in time to allow it to bloom better.

3. Proper pruning and shaping

If you want it to bloom more beautifully, you must prune and shape it properly. Many branches will grow in front of its side branches, and there are very few flower buds, so they need to be pruned appropriately. All the overgrown branches, weak branches, diseased and dead branches on the side branches should be cut off. In autumn, just cut off 10 cm of the short branches and leave 5 to 6 small buds on the long branches. This will make the branches less dense, make the plant shape more beautiful, and produce more and bigger flowers.

4. Proper cold protection measures

If you are in the south you don't have to worry, but if you are in the north you need to be careful. Although it has a certain degree of cold resistance, this only applies to adult plum blossoms. If it is a seedling, some measures need to be taken. If it is a potted plant, you can place it on the balcony in the room to spend the winter. If it is outdoors, you need to cover its roots with some straw.
