The correct way to prune asparagus fern

The correct way to prune asparagus fern

Asparagus fern is an elegant and delicate plant. Many flower lovers will keep one in their home. However, many people find that asparagus fern becomes less and less shapeless as time goes by. In fact, this is related to improper pruning. Let’s learn the correct method of pruning asparagus fern.

Step 1: Examine the plant shape and adjust the horizontal balance

First, observe the overall shape of the asparagus fern. If the side branches of asparagus fern grow unevenly, causing the plant to look unsightly, our goal is to remove these extra side branches, move the horizontal center of gravity of asparagus fern from both sides to the center, and restore its balanced shape.

Step 2: Consider the characteristics of the flower pot and determine the vertical proportion

The size and shape of the pot are also important considerations when pruning. For tall and thin flower pots, the height of asparagus fern should be properly controlled to avoid the uncoordinated effect of the plant being short and the flower pot being too high. On the contrary, if the flowerpot is shorter, the height of the asparagus fern can be lowered appropriately to achieve a harmonious visual effect.

Step 3: Prune side branches and adjust the horizontal structure

Starting from the left side, select the lowest branch to prune to adjust the center of gravity of the plant. At the same time, retain the bud points of the bottom branches to leave room for future growth. Next, perform the same pruning on the branches on the right side to move the center of gravity of the asparagus fern closer to the center.

Step 4: Prune high branches to optimize vertical height

After the horizontal pruning is completed, prune those branches whose height does not match the flower pot to lower the vertical center of gravity of the plant. When pruning, start from the base of the branch, leaving a bud point, and avoid cutting too deep to avoid affecting the growth of the plant and the health of the roots.

Step 5: Adjust the center of gravity to achieve central symmetry

Finally, in order to make the shape of asparagus fern more concentrated and balanced, the branches on both sides need to be further pruned. Starting from the left side, remove heavy leaves and creeping shoots to prevent the plant from overgrowing. Then, perform similar pruning on the right side to make the center of gravity of the asparagus fern more concentrated, and adjust the height of both sides appropriately to create a staggered beauty.

In short, before pruning asparagus fern, we must first carefully observe its shape and the characteristics of the flowerpot to determine the pruning strategy and focus.
