How to fertilize Oncidium

How to fertilize Oncidium

1. Time of fertilization

The time for fertilization should be determined according to the actual situation of the Oncidium. Although the growth conditions may vary depending on the variety, the normal principles of fertilization can still be followed.

Spring, summer and autumn are the growth periods of Oncidium. Liquid fertilizer needs to be applied two or three times a month until the flower stems of the plant begin to emerge. Fertilization should be stopped, and normal fertilization can be resumed after the flowering period is over. In addition, fertilizer should not be applied when the temperature is less than 10 degrees Celsius.

At other times, you can apply liquid fertilizer two or three times a month. Of course, you can also mix it with solid fertilizer. In addition, depending on the variety, generally tubular and leathery varieties need to be fertilized twice a month, but Oncidium vulgaris needs to be fertilized starting in April and once every ten days.

2. Fertilization Methods

Proper fertilization is very important for Oncidium. When planting, a small amount of fertilizer should be used as base fertilizer. Generally, the substrate of potted Oncidium is not easy to retain water and fertilizer, so some local fertilizer should be applied in the pot to increase the fertilizer efficiency of the potting soil.

After that, fertilization can be applied according to various situations. It is generally recommended to apply bean cake water or bone meal once a month. Except in late autumn and winter when the temperature is too low, liquid quick-acting fertilizer should be applied every two or three weeks at other times. It can be applied to the leaves or to the roots. When the Oncidium is about to bloom, be sure to apply sufficient phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. In order to effectively prevent and control diseases and pests, you can frequently water Oncidium with carbendazim or methyl thiophanate.

Potted Oncidium is very ornamental, but fertilizing it during the maintenance process is not that simple. I hope everyone can apply fertilizer in moderation according to the editor’s method. I wish the potted Oncidium you grow will become more and more beautiful!
