How to reproduce Michelia intoxicata

Seed propagation

Seed Collection

The best seeds for this plant come from healthy, sound, strong and straight mother trees that are more than 20 years old. Generally, the purple fruits are picked after October and before November every year, then exposed to the sun for dehydration and dried, and manually processed to obtain the seeds. Then rub the seeds in water and store them in wet sand. (If you feel it is too troublesome to collect seeds by yourself, you can buy them directly at the flower market)

Habits

The living environment of Michelia odorifera seeds should be selected with moderate sunlight, and the seeds should be buried a little deeper, but the air permeability and drainage of the soil must be guaranteed. The best time for reproduction is generally early spring. Michelia odorata seedlings can be cultivated within two months and can be transplanted when they reach a certain height. If you are doing sowing and propagation in the second half of the year, you can cover it with plastic film when it is cold, and then take it out when the seedlings break through the soil.

Layering propagation

Select the strips and cut the skin

The same conditions as the selection of seeds, paper strips with straight, slender appearance, health and strength are suitable for layering propagation of Michelia odorifera. Measure 15 to 30 centimeters from the end of the selected branch and make a ring cut with a knife. The width should be about 1 centimeter and the depth should be the same as the depth of the bark to be cut off.

Process

Wrap the cut end of the paper strip with film, similar to the way a patient bandages a wound. Seal and tighten both ends, leaving a slight gap in the middle. Then pull down the branches and bury them shallowly in a layer of moist garden soil. New roots will grow in about a month, and then you can cut them off to grow a new seedling!
