How to prune poinsettia? It’s easy if you do these two things!

Topping

When pruning, we must retain the tender shoots needed for growth. If there are extra new shoots growing later, we need to prune them in time. Generally, the number of buds left can be selected according to the size of the flowerpot during planting. Keeping more buds can also ensure the number of flowers, so you need to consider it carefully.

Poinsettia needs to be pinched twice during its growth period. The first pinching is done around mid-June. When the poinsettia grows to 15 cm, retain about three nodes for pinching. In late August, pinching can be done according to needs. If more branches are needed, a few more nodes can be retained. If too many are not needed, the pinching height can be lowered. Generally speaking, it is more appropriate to leave five to nine flower heads on poinsettia. If too many buds are left, the demand for water and fertilizer will increase, which may easily lead to untimely supply, and the branches will grow thinner and the flower buds will be smaller.

Dwarfing

Poinsettia has a standard height ratio, but it is very difficult to control the height, which is something many people want to know. It generally needs to be controlled through pruning. By pruning the top, you can regulate its growth height and allow it to branch out in all directions. You can do a simple pruning when repotting, cut off the extra branches and leave only a few fixed ones. When you first start cuttings, you can control the height at 10 cm, then cut off the higher part, and then two or three branches will grow. If it is a plant that has been growing for several years, you can leave two buds at the roots and cut off the rest to concentrate nutrients on the growth of new branches.
