Black turtle breeding methods and precautions

The black turtle is a turtle with a jet black body. It is very unique and has a high ornamental value. Many people keep it at home. Here are some tips on breeding black turtles and some precautions.

1. Turtle pond disinfection

How to raise a new black turtle: Disinfect the turtle pond in advance, let it sit for 2 hours before putting it in the water, and feed it after 3 days. All black, many people like to raise black turtles to protect their homes.

2. Water level

The black turtle is a semi-aquatic turtle and its water ability is average. It is best to raise the black turtle in shallow water. The water level should be twice the length of its carapace. A water level depth of 3-5 cm is a reasonable range. The newly arrived turtle is not familiar with the environment yet. To avoid a stress reaction and drowning, keep the water in shallow water for a few days and then slowly deepen the water level.

3. Food

Black turtles need a lot of calcium and should be fed foods containing a lot of calcium. Occasionally feeding some fresh food such as boneless fish, snake meat, mice, etc. will surely win the favor of the black turtle. Feeding only fish and meat fillets will cause malnutrition, and water-soluble nutrients need to be added.

4. Water temperature

Black turtles can hibernate in winter and can hibernate normally in temperatures above zero degrees Celsius. Most turtles go into deep hibernation when the water temperature is 8 degrees Celsius. It will enter light hibernation at around 12 degrees Celsius and refuse to be fed at 15 degrees Celsius. The turtle hibernates for three to five months throughout the winter . Its metabolism is extremely slow and it basically does not consume any energy in its body, so it will not starve to death.

5. Lighting

The black turtle should occasionally bask in the sun to supplement calcium. The best time to bask in the sun is around 10 o'clock in the morning and around 5 o'clock in the afternoon. It is enough to bask in the sun for 2-4 hours a day. In places where there is no sunlight, you can buy a sun tanning lamp to imitate the sun.

6. Notes

The shells of aquatic black turtles in captivity may develop ulcers. Treatment is by medicated bath and systemic administration of appropriate antibiotics. However, different types of turtles are allergic to certain antibiotics and may be poisoned, so special care should be taken when using them.
