How to prune lilac

How to prune lilac

Pruning method of lilac: single trunk small tree

Cultivate it in the shape of small trees, and cut it flat when the seedlings grow to a certain length in late autumn. Strengthen water and fertilizer management in the second year to promote tree growth. Constantly tidy up the side branches during the cultivation process, and fix the trunk when it grows to about two meters. In the summer of the second year, select thick, evenly distributed branches with roughly the same spacing as the main branches. When the main branch grows to about 50cm, it is pruned back, leaving outer buds at the cut to promote the growth of side branches. In addition, the side branches should each be in one direction, and crossing of branches should be avoided.

How to prune lilac: multi-trunk shrub

Leave 4-5 main trunks, select appropriate main branches and side branches on each trunk, and do not cross them. With the focus on maintaining the tree shape, prune dense branches, crossed branches, drooping branches, dry branches, and diseased and insect-infested branches. To protect the flower buds from blooming in spring, do not prune short. If you want to promote the growth of new branches, make the tree shape beautiful and the crown lush, you can prune it if necessary. In addition, for lilac trees that are not intended to be used as mother plants, the withered flowers should be cut off in time after flowering to avoid excessive consumption of tree nutrients. Doing so will also improve the appearance of the lilac.
