Peony propagation method, peony division propagation

Peony propagation method, peony division propagation

1. Planting

After the peony seeds are mature, they need to be picked and sown in the soil. The survival rate is high if sown in autumn, but it is not easy to germinate if sown in spring. You can soak the seeds in warm water for a day before sowing to promote rooting. Prepare loose and fertile soil, sprinkle the seeds on the soil surface, water them appropriately, and cover them with plastic film. They will germinate in the spring of the following year.

2. Division

Peonies are generally propagated by division. The time for division is generally in autumn. If it is too early, it will easily cause the plant to sprout in autumn, affecting its growth in the second year. If it is too late, it will also affect its development. Before division, you need to take the plant out of the pot first, being careful not to damage the roots, and then separate out 3-5 sub-plants, each with 2-3 buds. The separated sub-plants can be planted directly into the soil.

3. Cutting

Cuttings are usually taken in mid-July. Cut 10-15 cm long branches as cuttings, with two nodes and compound leaves on the top. Dip the bottom of the cuttings in indoleacetic acid to promote rooting. Prepare loose and fertile soil, insert the cuttings about 5 cm, then water them thoroughly to keep the soil moist. They will usually take root in 20-30 days.

4. Layering

For peony layering, you need to select healthy plants, find a branch without diseases or insect pests from it, and then ring-bark it, being careful not to break the branch. Wrap the ring-barking area with wet soil and then wrap it with plastic tape. This will prevent the soil from falling off and also keep it moist. After waiting for the roots to take shape, you can separate and plant them.
