How to propagate apricot trees by grafting

Apricot tree grafting propagation method

The first thing to do for grafting propagation is to select the cuttings. The first step is to select some fresh buds in the middle of the cuttings, cut horizontally from the top of the fresh buds to approximately the xylem of the plant, and then cut from the bottom of the buds. You can stop when you cut to the horizontal incision above the buds. Use your fingers to gently peel off the skin on both sides of the bud, about 1.5 cm in length and 0.5 cm in width.

When the selected rootstock is about 5 to 10 cm above the ground, choose a smooth part of its surface and make a horizontal cut with a knife. The depth of the cut should be about the transdermal layer. Do not cut too deep and try not to cut into the xylem of the plant. Then cut downward. The most appropriate depth is about 1.5 cm. Make the horizontal incision and the longitudinal incision form a T-shape. Then use the knife as an aid to twist left and right along the longitudinal incision. Insert the cuttings while prying off the cortex. Do not twist the cuttings after insertion to protect the growth point of the plant and ensure normal grafting. And the plane on the bud should be closely aligned with the plane of the T-shaped cut.

After the grafting is completed, wrap it with a plastic bag. Remember to tie it tightly so that the cuttings and the rootstock are closely combined. In addition, the T-shaped incision must be tight to prevent diseases from entering and causing plant diseases and pests. The last key point is to be quick and reduce the time exposed to the outside, which will help improve the efficiency of grafting.
