The language and symbolism of irises

Symbolism

Europeans love irises and believe that they symbolize light and freedom. In my country, irises are often used to symbolize love and friendship, a bright future, and a keen eye. In ancient Egypt, irises were a symbol of strength and eloquence.

legend

In France, people regard iris as the national flower. According to legend, when Clovis, the king of the first dynasty of the Kingdom of France, was baptized, God gave him a gift, which was iris. In France, iris is a symbol of light and freedom.

The plant is named after the messenger of God and the rainbow that connects Earth to the rest of the world. There is also a legend that the rainbow once saved the life of the Frankish king in the 6th century. When he saw the rainbow rising from the Rhine River, he knew that the water was shallow enough at this time, so he crossed the river and escaped the enemy's pursuit.

Meaning

The genus name of iris, iris, means "rainbow" in Greek, referring to the rich colors of the flower. Generally, flower dealers and flower arrangers call it "Alice" based on the phonetic translation of its genus name.

In Greek mythology, Alice is the rainbow goddess. She is the messenger between gods and mortals. Her main task is to bring the souls of kind people back to heaven via the rainbow bridge between heaven and earth after their death. To this day, Greeks often plant this flower in cemeteries in the hope that the souls of the dead can be entrusted to Alice to take them back to heaven. This is also the origin of the flower language - "messenger of love".

Iris represented "strength" and "eloquence" in ancient Egypt. Israelis generally believe that yellow irises are a symbol of "gold", so there is a custom of planting irises in cemeteries in the hope that they will bring wealth to the afterlife.

Flower Language

Iris is the birth flower for January 3rd, and its flower language is: gorgeous. When the ancient Greeks who were on an expedition to Persia saw this flower, the goddess of the rainbow, Alice, immediately came to their mind. Therefore, the flower language of Persian iris is "gorgeous". People born under the blessing of this flower are versatile and have a shining and brilliant personality.
