How to propagate Magnolia grandiflora

Seed propagation of Magnolia grandiflora

Magnolia grandiflora can be propagated by sowing. In fact, sowing is not the simplest way, but you can try it.

The seed propagation time of Magnolia grandiflora is generally from September to October. Place the fruit of Magnolia grandiflora in a cool place for about 5-6 days, then take out the seeds and soak them in clean water. You can sow them immediately after picking them, or store the seeds in sand and sow them in the spring of the following year. When storing, be careful not to keep it too moist.

When sowing, you can choose loose and fertile sandy soil and add a little base fertilizer. When sowing, row sowing is generally chosen. The seeds are sown evenly. After covering them with soil, the soil must be compacted.

After sowing, the growth of Magnolia grandiflora is still relatively slow, and it can usually be transplanted 2 years after sowing.

Grafting propagation of Magnolia grandiflora

Grafting is a common method of propagation for Magnolia grandiflora. When choosing a rootstock, purple magnolia and white magnolia are generally used as rootstocks, and then one-year-old branches with terminal buds are selected as cuttings.

First, process the cuttings, cut them into 5-7 cm, with 1-2 axillary buds, cut off the leaves, and then graft them. When grafting, you can use cut grafting and belly grafting. If you choose grafting, you can graft the cuttings onto the rootstock 3-5 cm from the ground and cover it with soil. Belly grafting can be performed at 5-10 cm from the rootstock. It should be noted that when grafting Magnolia grandiflora, suckers are likely to appear and should be cut off in time.

Layering propagation of Magnolia grandiflora

The layering propagation of Magnolia grandiflora is carried out in spring. Choose 1-2 year old branches, cut them into a ring shape, then wrap them with soil or moss in a plastic bag and let them slowly grow roots. You can take them down and plant them in autumn.
