How to propagate ginkgo by cuttings

How to propagate ginkgo by cuttings

Cutting time

Ginkgo can be propagated by cuttings in spring and autumn.

For cuttings in spring, you can choose young branches grown that year. Generally, we choose new branches sprouting from ginkgo plants, wait until they grow to a length suitable for cuttings, and then take them down for cuttings.

If you are doing cuttings in autumn, you can choose mature branches grown that year. At this time, the new branches of the year have basically developed fully, so you can choose branches of appropriate length as cuttings.

Cutting selection

When growing ginkgo, you need to choose branches with terminal buds for cuttings. Generally, they are cut into branches with 3-5 nodes and a length of between 10 and 15 cm.

The rooting of ginkgo cuttings is relatively slow, so you can stick rooting powder on the part of the cuttings that is going to take root to increase the survival rate of the cuttings.

Cutting method

Put an appropriate amount of soil in the cutting container, don’t fill it too full, generally 60% to 80% full is enough. Keep the soil moist. After inserting the cuttings into the soil, place them in a semi-shaded place for maintenance, which is conducive to root growth.

Generally, after about 4 weeks of autumn cuttings, you can see adventitious roots growing from the base of the cuttings. Ginkgo cuttings that have been soaked in rooting agents in advance have more new roots and a higher survival rate.

For ginkgo cuttings taken in spring, the surviving plants can be moved into a round pot with a diameter of 7.5 cm. For ginkgo cuttings taken in autumn, they can be transplanted in the spring of the following year before the new leaves sprout.
