How to propagate daffodils

Propagation of daffodils by dividing bulbs

The bulb division propagation of daffodils is generally carried out in autumn. Gently break off the small bulbs that grow on both sides of the daffodil mother bulb to use as seed bulbs, and then plant them separately. Note that the planting depth of the mother bulb should be shallow rather than deep in order to speed up the reproduction. If the situation is too deep, the occurrence of sub-balls tends to be less frequent. In addition, the bulb needs to be cut with a slicer, making 3-4 longitudinal cuts from the stem disk to the top, with a depth of about half the bulb. Place the cut bulbs in clean dry sand to allow callus tissue to form, and then move them to a breeding box at a temperature of about 21°C for cultivation. When the temperature rises to 30℃ and the relative humidity is maintained at around 85%, most bulblets will generally be produced after about 3 months. These bulblets can be removed and transplanted. It takes 3-4 years for the sub-bulbs to become flowering bulbs.

Seed propagation of daffodils

The sowing and propagation time of daffodils is mostly in mid-September. The culture medium is suitable for a mixture of leaf mold, peat soil and a small amount of coarse sand. The substrate must be disinfected before sowing and then sowing. If careful management is taken after sowing, the seeds will generally germinate and grow into small plants in the spring of the second year. In early summer, the leaves and roots will wither and small bulbs will form. It takes about 4-5 years for the sown bulblets to bloom.
