How to prepare soil for growing orchids

How to prepare soil for growing orchids

1. Variety selection

There are many varieties, mainly divided into two types: fine-leaf and broad-leaf. Different varieties require different soils for planting, but most of them are based on leaf mold. Among them, leaf mold is mainly used for planting fine-leaved plants, while solid soil is mainly used for planting broad-leaved plants. However, the specific degree of emphasis depends on the breeding environment.

2. Soil Preparation

1. The simplest soil ratio for planting is to mix red soil and leaf mold, with an approximate ratio of 3:7. This provides sufficient nutrients and is beneficial to plant growth.

2. If red soil is not convenient to obtain during planting, you can also mix garden soil with an appropriate amount of leaf mold. Specifically, mix garden soil, field soil and leaf mold in a ratio of 3:2:5. However, garden soil and field soil are usually cultivated soil, so the amount used can be increased.

3. When planting and caring for orchids, the soil must have a certain degree of air permeability, so you can also mix it with an appropriate amount of sand and soil. It is best to use coarse sand, which has better air permeability and drainage. Specifically, it is prepared by adding three parts of coarse sand and seven parts of leaf mold.

3. Notes

When planting orchids, no matter how you prepare the soil, you must pay attention to the three points of air permeability, water retention and humus content. If it only contains humus but the air permeability is poor, the roots will easily rot in the later stage and will not survive. If the air permeability is good but there is no humus and the nutrients are insufficient, the growth will also be affected.
