What is the correct way to water Podocarpus?

Podocarpus is an evergreen coniferous tree with a well-developed root system and dense branches and leaves. It is a famous bonsai ornamental tree species and is deeply loved by flower lovers. So how do you water Podocarpus correctly when caring for it? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Water source selection

Choose an appropriate water source for watering. Podocarpus does not have high requirements for water quality. Generally speaking, tap water or filtered water can be used. But it is best to avoid using water sources that contain too much salt or chemicals to avoid harming the Podocarpus.

2. Watering time

The best time to water is early morning or late evening, when temperatures are lower and water can be absorbed more efficiently by the soil.

3. Watering frequency

The frequency of watering should be adjusted appropriately according to seasonal changes. Generally, you can water it once every 2-3 days in spring and autumn, once every morning or evening in summer, and add water appropriately in winter according to soil conditions.

4. Watering method

There are three ways to water Podocarpus: directly watering the soil, spraying the leaves, and showering the trunk. There is no need to say much about directly watering the soil, while spraying the leaves is suitable for summer. It should be done in the morning and evening to avoid water accumulation at noon to prevent leaf diseases. The trunk shower method is to keep the tree trunk moist by watering it from top to bottom during hot weather, promoting growth, while the water also penetrates into the soil.

5. Notes

When watering, do not use large amounts of water directly, as this will easily cause water accumulation in the pot soil. It is best to use a watering can or a narrow-mouthed pot to water slowly along the edge of the flower pot so that the water can penetrate the soil evenly. When you see water flowing out from the bottom of the pot, it means it has been watered thoroughly. At this time, you should pour out the accumulated water in the tray in time to prevent the roots from being soaked in water for a long time and causing rot.

6. Root rot treatment

If you water the plant frequently or fail to deal with the accumulated water in time, the roots of the Podocarpus will rot. At this time, you need to take the Podocarpus out of the pot, clean the soil from the roots, and then use sterilized scissors to clean the rotten roots. After disinfection, place it in a cool and ventilated environment to dry the wounds. After the wound of Podocarpus has dried, you can change the soil and replant it. It is most suitable for loose, slightly acidic soil with good drainage.

In general, watering Podocarpus requires certain skills, and the method is not static. It needs to be flexibly adjusted according to seasonal changes, environmental humidity and plant growth conditions.
