How to graft Ficus ginseng

Grafting of Ficus ginseng

There are two methods of grafting Ficus ginseng: branch grafting and wedge grafting.

Branch grafting of Ficus ginseng

Grafting is usually done in early April or in autumn when branches sprout, because the rootstock and scion should be selected from newly sprouted branches, especially the rootstock must use tender branches, preferably those that are still growing and have not yet capped. The specific steps of branch grafting include: first, use a sterilized blade to cut off the top of the rootstock, then cut a small hole downward along the pith, then take a short scion with the terminal bud and leaves retained, and cut its lower section into a V shape and insert it into the rootstock. At this time, it is important to pay attention to aligning with the cambium, and finally tie it firmly. After grafting the ginseng fig, water it thoroughly, then cover it with a plastic bag and move the plant to a sunny, ventilated and warm place. After that, remove the film every day to ventilate the area, and you can untie it after about one and a half months.

Wedge grafting of Ficus ginseng

Wedge grafting is usually performed in spring when the branches have just sprouted and the shoots have not yet grown. The specific steps of wedge grafting include: first, select a one-year-old strong branch and cut a six to ten centimeter small segment with axillary buds as the scion, and then cut the base into a slope of three centimeters on one side and one centimeter on the other side. Then cut the rootstock into flat sections, split a small opening longitudinally, and then insert the long cut surface of the scion into the rootstock, aligning it with the cambium. Finally, tie them with plastic strips and then cover them with plastic bags to keep them moist until the scion sprouts.

Ficus ginseng root

The cultivation of ginseng fig requires timely root lifting and shaping according to the size of the plant. Generally speaking, small and medium-sized potted plants are rooted eight to ten months after planting, while large potted plants are rooted two to three years after planting.
