How to plant lily bulbs

Root pruning

After purchasing, trim the poor roots under the bulbs. Note that only the poor and rotten roots should be trimmed. The intact roots do not need to be trimmed!

Soaking and disinfection

Soak the bulbs in a 1/1000th aqueous solution of thiophanate-methyl (or carbendazim, captan, potassium permanganate) for 30 minutes. After taking them out, rinse off the residual solution on the bulbs with clean water and place them in a cool place to dry.

Preparing the soil and pots

The soil for planting lilies can be prepared with leaf mold: sandy soil: garden soil in a ratio of 1:1:1. The flowerpot should be deep and large, with a diameter of 25 cm, and can plant 1-3 trees.

Apply base fertilizer

When planting, apply some fully decomposed compost or a small amount of bone meal as base fertilizer at the bottom of the pot (it’s okay if you don’t have it at home), and be sure to put a layer of soil more than 4 cm on top of the base fertilizer.

Placing the bulbs

Put the sterilized bulbs into the flowerpot, making sure the bottoms of the three bulbs are placed relative to each other and tilted at about 60 degrees.

Fill

Fill the pot with soil to cover the bulb and let the buds emerge from the soil. Don't fill the pot with soil, because as the lily grows taller, we will need to continue adding soil to ensure that the lily grows more stems and roots.

Water thoroughly

After planting, water thoroughly once, then place in a well-ventilated place with diffused light for a week. After that, ensure sufficient light and water only when the soil is dry.

Waiting for flowering

After 2-3 months of care, the lily will bloom beautiful flowers!

Lily daily care precautions

Plenty of sunlight

Lilies like light. If they lack sunlight or are shaded for a long time, their normal flowering will be affected. In addition, the flower pots should be rotated once a week during the growing season. Otherwise, the plant will tend to grow too tall, affecting its appearance.

Suitable temperature

The growth and flowering temperature of lily is 16-24℃. The growth almost stops at below 5℃ or above 30℃. The plants grow normally above 10℃. When the temperature exceeds 25℃, the growth stagnates again. If the night temperature in winter is below 5℃ for 5-7 days, flower bud differentiation and bud development will be seriously affected, resulting in delayed flowering and even blind flowers and flower cracks.

Water frequently

When watering, you only need to keep the soil in the pot moist, but you need to water it more frequently during the growing season and when the weather is dry, and often sprinkle water around the pot to increase the air humidity. The soil in the pot should not be too wet, otherwise the bulb will easily rot.

Apply fertilizer at the right time

Lilies do not have very high requirements for fertilizers, and usually just apply fertilizer at the beginning of growth and early flowering in spring. Some foreign growers believe that lilies require greater amounts of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers, and should be applied every 10 to 15 days during the growing season, while the supply of phosphorus fertilizers should be limited, because too much phosphorus fertilizer will cause the leaves to turn yellow. During the flowering period, phosphorus fertilizer can be applied 1 to 2 days later.

Pest Control

Common diseases of lilies include lily mosaic disease, bulb rot, spot disease, leaf blight, etc. When spot disease appears, the diseased leaves can be removed and sprayed once with 500 times diluted 65% mancozeb wettable powder to prevent its spread.

Scientific pruning

In order to make the bulb full, the withered flowers should be cut off in time after the lily blooms to reduce nutrient consumption, otherwise it will affect the blooming of other flowers.
