How to pinch the tips of carnations

How to pinch the tips of carnations

Pinching carnations according to their growth stage

Carnation is an ornamental flower, so it needs more branches and more flowers. Therefore, pinching must be started from the seedling stage of carnation. The first pinching is when the seedlings grow eight or nine pairs of leaves, at this time only four to six pairs need to be retained. The second pinching is done when the side branches grow four pairs of leaves, and three to four pairs are retained on each branch. During the bud formation period, only the flower buds at the top of each branch should be retained, and all those sprouting in the leaf axils should be picked off. Then once again you will need to cut off the flower stalks during the flowering period.

Types of Carnation Pinching

One-time pinching

Remove all the top buds of the carnation at once, leaving the side buds to grow and bloom. This method will greatly shorten the flowering time.

Second pinching

As we can see from the first pinching, the second pinching is the second pinching after the first pinching. This time, you can choose to pinch off half of the top buds of the side branches, and let the others grow. You can also choose to pinch all the flowers for the second pinching. The disadvantage of this is that the quality of the second batch of flowers will be reduced. Of course, compared with pinching once, the flowering time of pinching twice is greatly extended.

Pinching and bud removal

After the first pinching, wait until the side branches grow to five pairs before you can remove the buds. Then, as the side buds grow, you must continue to remove the buds. Of course, you must pay attention to the appropriate light and temperature conditions. In this way, we can ensure the output and quality, and there will be flowers almost all year round.
