How to Overwinter Figs

How to Overwinter Figs

1. Daily maintenance

Park address

In order for figs to safely overwinter, it is appropriate to choose a place that is sheltered from the wind and facing the sun, avoiding waterlogged areas and areas where cold air accumulates. Places where the minimum temperature in winter is below -15℃ are not suitable for building gardens. Cultivation can be carried out in courtyards or protected areas.

Planting at the right time

Choose suitable and more cold-resistant varieties, and generally choose to plant them around the time when buds sprout. If the timing is not suitable, such as planting in early spring or autumn, it is easy to cause frost damage and branch drying, which will endanger the growth of the plant.

Plastic pruning

The appropriate time for pruning is generally in late March, because if you prune at this time, the branches will not dry out. If you prune in winter, the branches will dry out generally. In mid-to-late August, pinching is needed 1-2 times, which can not only control the growth of branches and increase the lignification and cold resistance of branches, but also promote the early growth of fruits and their early maturity.

Fertilizer and water management

After entering autumn, it is necessary to control fertilizer and water, which is beneficial to increase the lignification of branches. In addition, watering the plants properly during the winter can improve their resistance to cold.

2. Wintering measures

White-painted grass

Paint the main branches of the fig tree and its larger side branches white with whitewash. Or before the severe winter comes, set up windbreaks and tie up protective materials such as straw ropes and corn stalks. Be careful not to tie the plants too early or too densely to strengthen anti-freeze training; do not untie them too early in early spring, preferably in late March, to prevent drying out caused by late spring cold.

Buried soil antifreeze

In areas with colder winters, measures can be taken to prevent frost by burying the plants in the soil, and pruning and burying the plants before the cold wave hits. If it is a potted plant in the garden, you can move it to a sunny place sheltered from the wind, or move it directly indoors.

Post-victim treatment

Cut off the above-ground branches that have died from freezing, and the adventitious buds underground will sprout, but they will sprout a little later. It should be noted that it is not advisable to prune away dry and dead branches too early in spring to prevent them from drying out again due to cold.
